Majority of businesses produce waste that is in some way harmful to human health or to the environment. Common hazardous waste streams include televisions, lead acid batteries, oil/fuel filters, fluorescent lighting and clinical waste.
In England, Northern Ireland and Wales this waste is known as Hazardous Waste and in Scotland this waste is known as Special Waste.
To indentify whether waste is hazardous or not you must use the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) which specifies a six digit code for all types of waste. Within the EWC all hazardous wastes are marked with an asterix (*) making them easily identifiable.
The Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 (as amended) came into force in July 2005 replacing the Special Waste Regulations 1996. Businesses must ensure all hazardous waste is dealt with appropriately including the movement, storage and disposal of waste Gas Discharge Lamps (GDL’s).
