Lug achieves Platinum EcoVadis rating

LUG EcoVadis

Polish luminaire maker LUG has been awarded the prestigious Platinum EcoVadis certification, placing the company among the top 1 per cent of businesses worldwide in terms of corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices.

‘While achieving the certification is a significant milestone, we’re continuing to push the boundaries of sustainable innovation in the lighting industry,’ Darrell West, country manager UK, told the Circular Lighting Report. ‘We’re committed to continually improving our sustainability practices to ensure that our journey makes a positive impact on the world.’

The company has taken some bold steps to challenge conventional industry norms in order to promote environmental responsibility. Last year, it called on the industry to rethink the practice of large-scale exhibitions, citing the urgent need to reduce the environmental impact associated with such events. The company made the conscious decision not to attend Light + Building 2024, stating that participation would have incurred a significant carbon footprint due to travel and logistical emissions.

By opting out, LUG says it ‘demonstrated its willingness to align its business decisions with its sustainability goals’.

‘We know it is not easy to feel that a company is missing out on opportunities to engage with peers, network and generally enjoy the lighting community,’ said West.

‘Yet LUG couldn’t justify the impact on the environment of travelling to Light + Building when our focus is on being the most sustainable company we can be. While there are many benefits of coming together as a sector, the advancement of online exhibitions and events should be leveraged much more to reduce ecological pressures.’

The manufacturer places a strong emphasis on environmentally responsible packaging, ensuring that its materials are designed for recyclability and minimal waste. This approach helps reduce the company’s ecological footprint while setting a standard for the industry.

Additionally, the company prioritises sustainable practices in areas such as water usage, energy efficiency, and recycling. By continuously evaluating and refining its operations, LUG remains dedicated to reducing its global impact. Opting out of the Light + Building event serves as just one example of the company’s broader mission to drive sustainable change in the lighting industry.
