Experts prepare next version of TM66

TM66 circularity measure

A team of experts is working on the next version of the lighting circularity metric TM66 and hopes to have it published later this year.

TM66, the standard for measuring the circular economy impact of a luminaire, has been in beta development for some time.

This autumn, another version will be published, based on feedback from the industry.

Bob Bohannon, head of policy and sustainability at the Lighting Industry Federation and co-author of TM66, will unveil the major changes at the Circular Lighting Live 2023 later this month.

TM66 is a Technical Memorandum created by the Society of Light and Lighting – part of Cibse –  which provides detailed guidance on the precise definition of circular economy when it comes to luminaires.

It has two major elements, CEAM-Make and CEAM-Design. CEAM-Make – This tool is the supply-push tool for manufacturers to complete (or designers if they wish) as it requires in-depth knowledge about products and manufacture. It will be an online/Excel based tool comprised of 66 questions under four tabs – product design, manufacturing, materials and supporting ecosystem.

Each question is rated and then scored between 1-4, where 1 is status quo and 4 is outstanding.

At the end of the assessment a total is generated, and a high score indicates a lighting product with good to outstanding Circular Economy credentials.

CEAM-Design – Is the demand-pull tool – its faster to complete, containing only 20 questions relating to the same questions in CEAM-Make.

It is aimed at lighting designers or specifiers to enable them to quickly understand what level of Circular performance a (not yet tested under CEAM-Make) product or manufacturer has. Again, at the end of the assessment a total is generated.

Bob Bohannon’s presentation, entitled ‘TM66: The important changes in the next version’ will take place at 2pm on Thursday 21 September 2023 at Circular Lighting Live, which takes place at the Royal College of Physicians in London.

• Don’t miss Circular Lighting Live 2023, Recolight’s flagship conference and exhibition taking place on Thursday 21 September 2023 at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Free to specifiers, Circular Lighting Live 2023 will feature leading experts, specifiers and policy makers who will share their insights into forthcoming standards and legislation, emerging technologies and new business models. For 2023, the organisers have moved to a bigger venue with more expansive exhibition floor and included a dedicated track for lighting designers. More info: www.circularlighting.live
