STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE

Remanufacturing to BS 8887-221:2024

REcolight Revive The Proces

To give you consistent and reliable upgrades, your luminaires are remanufactured in line with the BS 8887-221:2024 code of practice. It provides a systematic approach to the remanufacture of lighting products, giving you confidence that your remanufactured luminaires are compliant and fit for purpose.

BS 8887-221 sets out the tests and requirements that must be met for compliance from a technical perspective.

Lighting Performance for Your Application

Lighting effect and performance requirements depend on how your space will be used:

  • Like-for-like application – remanufacture to maintain the existing application. For example, office lighting remanufactured for the same location.
  • New application – where a change of use prompts the remanufacture, an alternative lighting performance is applied.

In each case, the design complies with the lighting codes of practice defined by the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL), or any other codes you nominate.

What Is BS 8887-221?

BS 8887-221:2024 is a British Standard specifically covering the remanufacture of luminaires. It sits within the wider BS 8887 “MADE” framework (Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly and End-of-life processing) and provides a structured process for taking existing lighting equipment and returning it to use through genuine remanufacturing.

Why BS 8887-221 Matters for Your Lighting

  • A credible definition. It separates genuine remanufacture from repair, refurbishment or reuse, so you know exactly what you are buying and what “remanufactured” or “circular” really means.
  • Confidence in safety and performance. Documentation, testing, validation and conformity assessment replace the assumption that an old fitting is fit for another life.
  • A repeatable, auditable process. A recognised methodology covers assessment, electrical and mechanical remanufacture, components, marking, instructions, testing and conformity.
  • Traceability. Clear records of the work carried out on each luminaire give you and your facilities team evidence, not just a sustainability claim.
  • Easier specification. Your tenders can reference a defined process instead of asking for “refurbished fittings”.
  • Lower perceived risk. It shows the remanufacture has followed accepted industry practice, addressing uncertainty about quality,  one of the main barriers to reuse.
  • Circular economy and carbon benefits. Keeping luminaires and components in service reduces waste, demand for virgin materials and the energy used to make new products, supporting a move away from “buy, use, dispose, replace”.

Remanufacturing With and Without BS 8887-221

What This Means for You

BS 8887-221 gives you a clear, recognised definition of remanufactured lighting. Instead of asking for “refurbished fittings” and hoping for the best, you can specify remanufacture to a defined process, with assessment, testing and documentation you can review. That gives you greater confidence that choosing remanufactured lighting does not mean accepting an undefined second-hand product.
