Globe lights illuminating an engineering company in Coventry have been retained and remanufactured resulting in an energy saving of 65 per cent.
Smart Systems UK were called into the metal cutting and grinding machinery company NCMT to find a solution for its installation of white glass pendants, which it wanted to retain. Each of the 90 globes contains four 42W TCT fluorescent lamps.
The lighting was causing issues both in terms of running costs due to high energy bulbs and with maintenance costs as the fittings are difficult to access for lamp and control gear maintenance.
Smart Systems UK decided that it needed to provide an LED solution which would address the twin problems of energy and maintenance.
Illuminating a spherical globe would be a challenge as the traditional LED ‘corn lamp’ style bulbs are not suitable or particularly efficient.
After a development process, the company developed a unique triangular sectioned gear tray that could be retro-fitted inside the globe replacing all four 42w fluorescent lamps.
Each side of the triangle has three LED PCB strips with a driver installed in the centre of the Toblerone-style box.
The new gear tray consumed just 70 Watts and with a guaranteed lifetime in excess of 50,000 hours the two problems were comfortably addressed.
The original load was 90 200W lights, a total 18kW. The new load is 90 by 70W, some 6.3kW, a reduction in total energy of 65 per cent.
Smart Systems UK, which was founded in 2000, is also located in Coventry.
Established in 1964, NCMT supplies machine tool and manufacturing technologies and is the exclusive UK supplier of Okuma, Makino and Blue Photon, delivering proven platforms for precision machining, grinding and advanced workholding applications.
