Peterborough-based retail lighting specialist and Recolight member Shoplight has unveiled the first UK-made track-mounted linear luminaire made using naturally derived plastic.
The body of the Natrio is extruded while its end caps are 3D printed, both using a biopolymer. It’s fully recyclable, repairable and dramatically lower in footprint.
The aerodynamic housing has been engineered to improve the thermal performance and overall system efficiency, making it more efficient than aluminium equivalents, says the company. Its integrated ventilation channels regulate the heat of the LEDs, supporting a stable output and extending the luminaire’s lifespan.
Aimed at ‘big box’ retail interiors, it features a lens rather than a diffuser and the 65W version boasts a maximum output of 9,000 lumens.
Optic options include 30, 60 or 90 degrees, elliptical, single asymmetric and double asymmetric for wall washing. Colour temperatures are 3000K or 4000K, with a CRI of 90. Control options include DALI and Casambi.
At the end of their first life, the aim is to take back the luminaires under the company’s Circu-light programme. This incentivises retailers to return the fittings, allowing Shoplight to recover materials and components rather than leaving them to become waste.
Shoplight has invested in its own 3dEvo shredder for recycling surplus plastic from the production of its luminaires. It says it reuses all major components and reforms the plastic back into new products.
The use of a bio-based polymer is intended to reduce reliance on virgin fossil-derived plastics or aluminium, while the combination of repairability, take-back and in-house material recycling is designed to address the luminaire’s whole lifecycle rather than simply its manufacture.
This approach also highlights the importance of considering what happens to lighting products after installation. Rather than treating end-of-life as a disposal issue, Shoplight’s model seeks to retain materials within the manufacturing cycle, potentially reducing the need for new raw materials.
Shoplight says the approach could provide a model for reducing material waste in retail lighting, where large numbers of fittings are typically installed and eventually replaced.
