Fagerhult has unveiled a 1200mm version of what has been hailed as the ‘world’s first premium pendant luminaire made of cardboard’.
The Wrapped fixture is made of organic recycled cardboard – known as solid board – which has 89 per cent less climate impact per kilogram than virgin aluminium.
The few details made of plastic and metal are also sourced from recycled post-consumer materials. The result, says Fagerfult, is a pendant luminaire with minimised environmental impact throughout, without compromising on light quality or design.
‘By choosing solid board, we’re stretching the idea that a pendant luminaire must be made of aluminium,’ product manager Christer Liljegren told the Circular Lighting Report. ‘We simply asked ourselves: Can we use another renewable and recycled material that is part of an established circular infrastructure?’
The lighter choice of material enabled a total weight of 1.6 kilograms for the 900mm pendant, less than half the weight of a typical aluminium luminaire. It also has the lowest environmental impact of the company’s pendants, measured at 11.7 kg of equivalent carbon dioxide.
Wrapped is available with the low-glare Beta Opti louvre and has a 50/50 direct and indirect light distribution. The 1200mm-long version was a response to customer demand.
The luminaire has a wide range of light control solutions, including Organic Response and BrightSwitch, and is future-proofed for any smart building context.
Wrapped has a rated lifetime of 100,000 hours, efficacies of up to 165 lm/W, and is made at Fagerhult’s factory in Habo, southern Sweden.
Wrapped isn’t the company’s first foray into unconventional materials. In 2022 it unveiled Kvisten, a luminaire whose reflectors are made from discarded television sets.
Kvisten is made from 77 per cent recycled or renewable materials, including a body is made entirely of pine plywood housing with Birch veneer.
Only 180g of virgin plastic is used in each fixture, and the packaging is plastic free.
