Hospitality lighting is getting a circular makeover, with Duni collaborating with Signify to launch a range of luminaires made using recycled material and 3D printing.
The Swedish group, best known for tableware and food-service products, launched d.ls – Duni Lighting Solutions in April, marking its move into professional lighting for hotels, restaurants and other hospitality environments.
Alongside a portfolio of cordless lighting, d.ls has introduced a design collection developed with hospitality design studio Stylt Trampoli and Signify myCreation.
The collection uses recycled material in 3D-printed components, with the manufacturers aiming to reduce the number of parts and make the products easier to service. Replaceable batteries are also used to extend product life.
Duni says the approach is intended to improve circularity by combining longevity, serviceability and recycled materials.
The use of additive manufacturing also offers a different approach to conventional luminaire production. Rather than requiring moulds and dedicated tooling for every design, 3D printing can produce complex forms directly from digital files.
It also allows products to be manufactured when required, potentially reducing the need to produce and store large quantities of finished stock.
The collaboration with Signify myCreation brings an established 3D-printing technology to Duni’s hospitality-focused designs. Signify’s myCreation business specialises in digitally manufactured luminaires, allowing designers to create complex shapes while avoiding some of the material and tooling constraints of conventional production.
The new d.ls range is aimed initially at the hospitality sector, where cordless luminaires are increasingly used to create flexible ambience lighting.
Duni says the products have been designed for long service life, with features including replaceable batteries, extended operating times and, for relevant products, IP-rated protection.
For Duni, the move represents more than an expansion into lighting. It also provides an opportunity to apply circular manufacturing principles from the outset – using recycled materials, fewer components and repairability rather than treating end-of-life as an afterthought.
