Somerset to save £160K with LED upgrade

Somerset LED lighting

Somerset’s towns and city are set to save around £160,000 a year by upgrading its high pressure sodium streetlights to LED.

Around 20,000 conventional light points will be upgraded using Philips TrueForce LED lamp.

The payback will be 18 months and energy consumption will be cut by up to 50 per cent.

The True Force Core LED Road Lamp is a direct retrofit for the hugely popular SON-T lamp, which has been used to illuminate the UK’s roads for decades.

The sources have been designed to have the same lamp size and light distribution as other HID lamps. They also have an IP65 ingress protection rating for outdoor applications.

The lamp features high-power LED filament technology with a clear glass finish and a uniform light distribution.

According to Signify’ s data, if the entire UK and Ireland followed Somerset County Council’s example and switched all conventional road and streetlights to LED, the country could save 603 thousand tonnes of carbon and £520 million per year in energy costs.

Beyond energy and climate goals, upgraded lighting offers improved visibility, helping residents feel secure, and boosting visibility for CCTV.

‘Somerset’s LED upgrade demonstrates that lighting is an area where a relatively small change can have an immediate and far-reaching positive impact,” said Simon Greenwood of Signify.

By using retrofit lamps, Somerset avoids high upfront costs, prolongs the life of traditional lanterns, and preserves the county’s historic appeal.

• Remanufacturing Lighting is the subject of a special one-day conference organised by Recolight and taking place on Thursday 27 April 2023 at the Coin Street Conference Centre in London. This CPD-approved event will give you the tools, insights and contacts make a success of luminaire reconditioning and reuse. You’ll learn how to sell the concept of reconditioned lights, develop best practice policies, comply with the standards, set up a testing regime for reused luminaires and remanufacture fittings at scale. The gathering will also give you inspiration from real world projects which prove that remanufacturing can be a success everyone. You’ll also meet key players in the remanufacturing industry  network with specifiers with the power to get your products into projects. See more HERE.
