Recolight unveils certification for used luminaires

Have you got a used luminaire with life left it in? Need a second opinion on its remaining life? Looking to save embodied carbon on a project?
Recolight has introduced a Used Luminaire Certificate for second life lighting products. The service aims to give developers, consulting engineers and lighting designers added confidence to specify re-used lighting.

‘Many projects generate unnecessary waste by replacing relatively recent lighting products with brand new fittings,’ says Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey. ‘Reuse is the easiest mechanism to prevent this, while extending product lifespans, and lowering embodied carbon.’

The Used Luminaire Certificate will include a report on the condition of the luminaire, its completed burn hours, if available, its suitability for reuse and the potential for upgrading with the latest technology.

The organisation stresses that it’s not a substitute for a warranty or CE mark, which should be provided by a firm contracted to provide any required reconditioning. The latter could be the original equipment supplier or one of growing number of lighting remanufacturers.

Recolight developed the certification in response to growing demand from building owners and specifiers looking to embed circular economy principles in their projects.

With the built environment responsible for around 40 per cent of global carbon emissions, attention is increasingly turning to the embodied carbon locked up in lighting and other building systems.

By providing a transparent, independent assessment of used luminaires, the certificate aims to remove one of the key barriers to reuse: uncertainty over product condition and performance. The service will also help project teams document sustainability credentials and demonstrate compliance with corporate or public sector carbon reduction targets.

‘We’re seeing a real appetite across the industry to do more with what we already have,’ says Harvey. ‘This certification gives professionals a practical tool to support reuse at scale – helping to normalise second-life lighting as part of mainstream specification practice.’

Recolight plans to pilot the Used Luminaire Certificate with several major projects over the coming months before making it widely available across the UK lighting sector.
