UK additive manufacturer LumiAdd has unveiled a 3D-printed pendant which can be scaled in size to suit the project.
Every Desica fixture shares the same geodesic foundation beneath the surface but an internal logic lets radically different sculptural forms be attached to it. The company says this allows each formation to be a genuine statement in its own right.
LumiAdd says that most 3D-printed luminaires are capped by what a single printer bed can produce, while Desica isn’t. Its modular system assembles multiple smaller printed forms into one larger structure — scaling from an intimate 350mm right up to a striking 2,000m+ statement piece, all from the same underlying system.
Every attachment point can vary in scale or carry a different form entirely, so the same platform produces dramatically different finished luminaires from piece to piece.
‘This isn’t a fixed catalogue,’ says the firm. ‘It’s a genuinely open system, design left free.’
Desica can be specified with individually addressable RGBW light sources on each attached form.
In 2024, the company received prestigious gold and green Build Back Better Awards in the lighting category for its Lania track-mounted spotlight which is partially made from coffee grounds.
LumiAdd has printed products using other waste streams, including re-claimed oyster and scallop shells, spent grain from beer production and waste from chocolate production.
LumiAdd uses plant-based polymers to 3D print luminaires. It says that the plant polymers it uses are significantly more sustainable than conventional materials currently used in the lighting industry.
They produce 33 per cent less Co2 emissions than petro-chemical polymers and 97.5 per cent less Co2 emissions than aluminium.
3D printing on demand results in zero waste. LumiAdd products achieve the highest TM66 (CIBSE Circular Economy Assessment Method for Manufacturing) category of excellent circularity. LumiAdd also offers a buy back scheme to support the return of LumiAdd luminaires at the end of their first use to ensure they can be reused again.
