Signify has achieved its highest-ever score in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment, placing it among the top 1 per cent of companies rated by the organisation and marking its seventh consecutive year of Platinum recognition.
The company, the world’s largest lighting manufacturer, received an overall score of 88 out of 100, up from 84 in its previous assessment. It also achieved a perfect score of 100 in the Environment category.
Signify’s head of sustainability, Maurice Loosschilder, told the Circular Lighting Report: “The score reflects our comprehensive approach to climate action and circularity. The assessment highlighted Signify’s strengths in setting science-based environmental targets, improving energy efficiency, while using 100% renewable electricity and advancing circularity.
“It also recognised our strong environmental governance and product lifecycle programmes that support repair, reuse, take-back and recycling.”
Circularity has become an increasingly important part of the lighting industry’s sustainability agenda, as manufacturers face growing pressure to reduce resource consumption, extend product lifetimes and address waste at the end of a luminaire’s useful life.
Measures such as designing products for repair and reuse, establishing take-back schemes and improving recycling provision can help reduce the environmental impact of lighting products beyond their operational energy consumption. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) and lifecycle assessments are also gaining importance as the industry seeks to quantify and communicate the impacts of its products.
EcoVadis evaluates the quality of companies’ sustainability management systems against 21 criteria grouped into four themes: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.
Its ratings consider a company’s policies, actions and reported results, supported by documented evidence and external information. More than 150,000 businesses use EcoVadis sustainability ratings and related tools.
The Platinum medal is awarded to companies ranked in the top 1% of all businesses assessed by EcoVadis during the preceding 12 months. Signify’s latest result therefore recognises its performance across a broad range of sustainability management measures, alongside its environmental commitments.
