Danish firm unveils pendants made from coffee waste

Danish design brand Mater has introduced the Terra lighting collection, a series of pendants and companion fixtures designed by Copenhagen studio OEO Studio that uses a circular bio-composite material incorporating coffee waste and other post-consumer residues.

Danish design brand Mater has introduced the Terra lighting collection, a series of pendants and companion fixtures designed by Copenhagen studio OEO Studio that uses a circular bio-composite material incorporating coffee waste and other post-consumer residues.

The collection is built around Mater’s proprietary Matek material system, which blends coffee shell waste with additional recycled and organic inputs to form a mouldable, load-bearing composite. Rather than applying sustainability as a surface treatment, the material itself defines the structure and finish of each luminaire. The result is a solid, stone-like form that replaces traditional plastic or metal housings with a visibly granular, bio-based surface.

Terra’s design language is intentionally restrained, focusing on a simple conical geometry shared across pendant, wall, and portable versions. Light is shaped primarily through the form of the shade rather than translucency in the material, producing a controlled, downward glow suited to hospitality and interior architectural settings.

By integrating functional components into a single-material body, the design reduces part count and simplifies assembly. This approach is intended to improve disassembly potential at end of life and support reuse of the composite material within the same production loop.

The collection reflects a wider shift in contemporary lighting design toward regenerative materials, where waste streams such as coffee by-products are treated as feedstock for new manufacturing systems rather than discarded residues. In this context, Terra positions itself less as a decorative object and more as an experiment in scaling circular material infrastructure into mainstream architectural lighting.

The Terra is not the first to use coffee waste. The UK-based manufacturer LumiAdd produces the Lania track-mounted spotlight, which incorporates spent coffee grounds blended with plant-based polymers to create a textured bio-composite housing. The design gained wider industry attention after winning a prestigious Build Back Better Award, where it was recognised in both Gold and Green categories for its contribution to low-carbon lighting innovation and circular design practice.
